Coronado News by Neighborhood: What Is Happening Where

Local news sorted by place, from the Village and Orange Avenue to the Cays and the island as a whole.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS · OCTOBER 2026

Coronado is a few square miles, but a news item can matter to one neighborhood and not another. This page sorts recent local stories by where they play out, so a Village owner can find the Orange Avenue schedule and a Cays owner can find the waterways update. Each item shows its date and links to the original report.

The Village and Orange Avenue

  • By The Sea opens on Orange Avenue after a four-year renovation (Aug 15, 2026) — The Village's main street gained a restaurant in August. By The Sea fills the second floor at 1300 Orange Avenue, formerly the Boardwalk Beach Club, with a Mediterranean seafood menu and bar. It adds to the dining choices along the Village's main street. Coronado Times
  • City considers buying 213 Orange Avenue for affordable housing (Jun 16, 2026) — A lot in the Village is in line to become city-owned land for affordable housing. The June agenda proposed paying $4.84 million, the appraised value, for 0.16 acre at 213 Orange Avenue, with roughly six units possible later. Nothing has been drawn up. It is a Village item, a few blocks from the core of Orange Avenue. Coronado Times
  • Orange Avenue makeover moves ahead in two phases (Apr 21, 2026) — The Village's main street is getting a two-step makeover. The first step, street furniture, is aimed at early 2027, and the second, sidewalks, lighting, irrigation and the 800 block, no sooner than January 2028, after the council added $458,363 for design in April. The work centers on the Village's main commercial street. Coronado Times

The Cays

  • Invasive algae emergency in the Coronado Cays extended (Jun 16, 2026) — The Cays' inlets are the focus of a city emergency over Caulerpa, an invasive algae. The June extension came with $850,000 in secured grants, a cleanup estimate above $1.2 million and survey results showing about a quarter acre more infestation. It affects the Cays' inlets and docks most directly. Coronado Times

Across the whole island

  • County looks for researchers to study Tijuana River Valley pollution and health (Oct 9, 2026) — Public-health researchers are being recruited to look into past exposure to Tijuana River Valley pollution and illness in surrounding communities. San Diego County has budgeted $200,000 to $250,000, and bids are due October 30. This affects the beach-side neighborhoods most, but it is an island-wide topic. Coronado Times
  • City switching its emergency alerts from Nixle to Everbridge (Oct 9, 2026) — Alerts about roads, weather and emergencies are changing hands: Everbridge takes over from Nixle, and residents in every neighborhood will be able to choose which notifications to receive. Nixle keeps running alongside it until April 2027. The change applies to every neighborhood on the island. Coronado Times
  • Four candidates are running for two City Council seats (Oct 8, 2026) — City government is on the ballot this November: two seats are open on the Coronado City Council and four candidates are competing. Voters in every neighborhood choose the same two winners. Council decisions touch every neighborhood, from the Village to the Cays. Coronado Times
  • City keeps renewing its local emergency over cross-border sewage (Jul 21, 2026) — The ocean side of the island has felt the effects of Tijuana River pollution since the city declared a local emergency in March 2025. The council renews the declaration about every two months, and a July meeting included the latest extension. The ocean-side neighborhoods feel this most, though it is an island-wide issue. Coronado Times
  • Public hearing on the 2026-27 sewer service charge (Jul 21, 2026) — Every parcel on the island that receives sewer service pays an annual charge, and the council reviewed the 2026-27 report in July. The city projects roughly $8 million in total revenue, with about $5.7 million collected through county property tax bills. Every parcel that receives sewer service pays it. Coronado Times
  • Council scheduled to consider joining San Diego Community Power (Jul 21, 2026) — An energy item reached the council on July 21: membership in San Diego Community Power, a community choice program. Staff reported no membership fee for the city and no change in who delivers power, with default enrollment for island residents and businesses expected in March 2028. The outcome was not confirmed in the source. It would apply across the island, not to one neighborhood. Coronado Times
